Urban Information Systems UIS is a cross-cutting group that connects faculty, staff, and students who are interested in the ways information and communication technologies impact urban planning.
Research topics include building neighborhood information systems to facilitate public participation in planning; exploring the complex relationships underlying urban spatial structure, land use, transportation, and the environment; modeling urban futures and metropolitan growth scenarios; and experimenting with mobile computing, location-based services, and the community building, planning, and urban design implications of ubiquitous computing.

Much of UIS's work involves the development and use of planning-related software and the urban analytics, spatial analysis tools, and systems such as GIS and distributed geoprocessing that are increasingly important parts of urban planning methods and metropolitan information infrastructures.
